Belize is poised to make quantum leap in all areas of national development by exploiting the power of information and communication technologies (ICT). Through the implementation of this National Information and Communications Technology Strategy’s (National ICT Strategy) programs will accelerate the creation of a more prosperous future for all Belizeans.

ICTs have transformed the world, and the lives of millions in every faucet of life all around the world. The way we communicate, interact, learn, do business take care of health, socialize and care for each other are all influenced by ICT. In so many dimensions the transformation enable by ICTs have been breathtaking.

Belize deserves and demands nothing less. This National ICT Strategy outlines the path to accelerated development for all Belizeans though leveraging the power of ICTs. It places the Information and Communication Technologies at the center of Belize’s social and economic development as a dynamic industry sector in itself, and in support of the development of other sectors of Belize. 2011 ICT Benchmarking Report

The Government of Belize has embarked upon a process of developing a comprehensive National Information and Communications (ICT) Strategic Plan. The National ICT Plan will serve as a roadmap to guide ICT development, accessibility and utilization at a national level. An ICT Benchmarking study was commissioned to inform the strategy development process regarding the current state of ICT diffusion in Belize. The study is a comparative assessment of a selection of seven countries against which the performance of Belize is measured. It also showcases several international best practices in the use and deployment of ICTs, which can assist in the strategic planning exercise.

Benchmarking – What does this involve?

Benchmarking is a measurement and evaluation process that provides opportunities for improvement based on the findings of the assessment. Competitive benchmarking involves comparing the performance of an entity (such as a country or organization) to the performance of other similar types of entities or comparators using a combination of objective and subjective criteria. The benchmarking process focuses on activities that are currently taking place or have taken place in the recent past.

Why is benchmarking a useful tool?

Benchmarking provides a basis for change. It helps to identify areas of strength and weakness. It is about learning, and using the information presented to establish priorities, target areas for improvement and foster new ideas in an effort to attempt to achieve the best practice standard, if this is not already in use. 2011 ICT E-Readiness Report

The e-Readiness analysis looks at the current state of ICT preparedness within Belize, using primary data collected through a survey questionnaire sent to a number of public and private sector organizations.
The e-Readiness Assessment analyzed the preparedness of Belize to participate in the global information society and digital economy. The level of e-Readiness was gauged by assessing maturity across a series of ICT indicators that are considered key in facilitating national development and delivering broad ICT-related benefits.
